Anyone know WHY this movie wasn't nominated...

for Oscars for cinematography and special effects? I think these are the most realistic special effects of any movie of the period.

Torpedo Run was nominated for special effects. Tom Thumb won. I've never seen either so I can't comment. But I find it odd only two films were nominated for special effects that year.

Those are standard miniature naval battles in RUN SILENT. They'd been doing them that way for decades. Howard Lydecker, one of the effects guys on the film, did all the miniatures for Republic Pictures, along with his brother, Theodore. Howard was nominated twice for Oscars, both for war films in the 1940s, including FLYING TIGERS (1942), the last time he was nominated. The effects in RUN SILENT are skillful and competent, but not particularly groundbreaking or innovative. Not Oscar-worthy.
