Porky Pig

While Daffy is prepping up another scheme to prove his identity as Robin Hood, there's a brief moment where Porky sings this song that doesn't register in my head. It sounds like a gag, but i never got it.

"There was a time, when I was young, there was a fair maid dwellin'. <something something something>, oh what a day, her name was barbara allen."

Can anyone explain who Barbara Allen was, and how this joke makes sense?

reply

I googled it and found that the song was actually a traditional english ballad but I haven't found anything that suggests there was a gag involved. If there is a joke to it, I'm not getting it. It may be that they simply needed a way for Porky to enter the scene and wanted him to be singing an old english tune.

"In Scarlet town where I was born,
There was a fair maid dwellin'
Made every youth cry Well-a-day,
Her name was Barb'ra Allen."

No gag, just a bit of medieval colour...

Did anyone notice that Porky sang this song straight and without his trademark stuttering? This must have been a first for the Porkster.

Th-Th-Th-Th-That's All Folks!

As a stutterer who loved Porky...he was like me and he was funny...I can tell you that stutters don't stutter when they sing.

I had never doubted that real-life stutterers don't stutter when they sing. I was referring solely to the fictional Porky Pig character, who in such cartoons as "Porky's Prize Pony", "Porky's Cafe", "Naughty Neighbors", and others, does indeed stutter while he sings.

Yeah lol, remember the opening bit for the Drip-Along Daffy?

One of my favourite moments in this cartoon comes from Porky Pig. When Daffy is swinging from the trees and getting more and more drained and concussed, when the camera cuts to Porky watching him and you hear the sound of Daffy crashing, his eyes follow the movements, and on the very last one his eyes instantly squint and look at the camera. I never fail to laugh at that bit. Obviously my explanation does it no justice whatsoever, but obviously you've seen it and know what I'm talking about. It really is comedic genius.

What's that? You just called me a bastard didn't you!
