The 'Pilgrims'

Sure, it's just played for laughs and this is a comedy. But did the screenwriters who wrote the "Mayflower landing" reenactment scene know any different? Did they really think that the Pilgrims had anything to do with John Smith and Pocahontas? Dollars to donuts the writers neither knew nor cared!

My impression is that the inaccuracy was supposed to be part of the humor, conveying the dopeyness of a suburban wife. Or perhaps to show how the character was willing to jumble together bits and pieces of history to make her point, because she was such an over-enthusiastic screwball.

Like much of the writing in this film, it fell flat for me -- left me wondering "is this supposed to be satire?"

I think we both can agree that the writing was not very careful or well-crafted, whether the writers knew their history or not.
