Rally 'Round the Flag, Boys! provided the film's supports, Dwayne Hickman and Tuesday Weld (as the romantically-inclined teenage couple), with a warm-up for the following year's cult TV series, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis in which Dobie (Dwayne) would once again pursue Thalia (Tuesday). It also reunited them with Rally 'Round's creator Max Shulman. "Comfort Goodpasture" - a great ridiculous, over-the-top name for a love interest character.
shareAgreed. They were cast in Dobie Gillis because Max Shulman noticed their chemistry together. And there was something of a chase offscreen as well. Dwayne asked Tuesday for a date during filming of Rally 'Round The Flag, Boys!"/, but she rebuffed him. I think he was always attracted to her (and you can see that whenever they shared scenes both in the film and in the TV series), but he was annoyed with not only being rejected but the fact that she didn't like to rehearse and that she was introverted and kept to herself, the latter which didn't allow him to get close to her. He has always praised her beauty and talent in glowing terms and when she returned to Dobie for guest appearances in the last two seasons their working relationship improved. In recent years he has had nothing but positive things to say about Tuesday. They certainly had great chemistry.
