Sanitisation of Fowler?

Among the many betrayals of Greene’s novel in this film, has anybody commented on the cleaning up of Fowler? In the book, the man’s weaknesses and failures were intensified by his addiction to opium. Quite how he expected to hold down a more responsible job in London and keep up his habit was not explained.
