I Saw This Today

I really enjoyed this film.

It was a decent film with great performances by the leads. Only criticism is it was predictable in parts of the storyline.

Underrated old western I must say! Glad you enjoyed it!

Just watched it, I really liked the movie a lot. I'm a big Alan Ladd fan, he does a terrific job in this. Olivia de Havilland is very good too and David Ladd does a great job as the son. The dog is a good actor too! The Burleigh family are kind of stock characters and the plot is a bit predictable, but Michael Curtiz was a great director and does a fine job here. This is one I'll watch whenever it comes on TV.

I also watched The Proud Rebel for the first time on TCM last evening and enjoyed it. As the story unfolded I couldn't help but notice how similar The Proud Rebel was with the movie Shane.
Alan Ladd was the leading actor in both movies and the main character helped the landowners maintain and develop their property and keep it out of the hands of the antagonists. Both movies had a young boy and dog in it which greatly added to the story.

I just happened upon this surfing while doing the dishes and got hooked. I really know my westerns (particularly the "B's")but I had never heard of this one. I have trouble buying Alan Ladd as a western hero(including Shane) but I really enjoyed the movie.A mute boy, his faithful dog, a lonely spinster trying to hold on to her land, the bad land grabbers and the valiant hero is a pretty good formula particularly in the hands of one of the great directors of the movies golden age.

Saw this yesterday and absolutely loved it. I could not take my eyes off the screen. Great decision to cast Alan's actual son, David, as the son in the film. Their chemistry together was palpable. I loved the dog and felt he acted as well as Alan and de Havilland. Curtiz was a fantastic director and he, along with the actors, really brought the most out of the moving scenes in this: the farm burning down, the dog being sold, David speaking for the first time, David being reunited with the dog, de Havilland begging Alan not to go and Alan explaining he has to go, etc. I thought it was great!
