de Havilland must have been hard up for money to lend her considerable acting talent to this dog of a movie. It just dragged on and on. Some romance between Ladd and de Havilland would have helped. At least she showed some attraction for Ladd but he was a stiff dud who rarely gave her a second glance. I kept waiting for him to grab and kiss her but it never happened.

Yeah, she was 'gold' standing right in front of him and he could barely discern it, maybe because he was war weary and concerned about finding a solution to his son's muteness.

Same here; he needed to get a pulse.

Nevertheless, the ending conveys that the three would live happily ever after as a family.
