Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention but I thought Alan Ladd mentioned once that the dog was raised by his son while he was away during the war. He also mentioned that his son was shipped off to an orphanage and he found him in Pennsylvania. So where was the dog while the son was in the orphanage?

Listen close to the dialogue, Ladd states his son and the dog were both sent north after the mother's death. He went on to say he found them both in an orphanage in PA.
