White horse

Does anybody have anything to say about the white horse which appears twice in the film?

I think that white horse is a symbol of independence and freedom and this is very important symbol - also in other films like Jarhead and novel "The Tin Drum". This is also typical polish symbol of our cavalry (chivalry)...uhlans.

'Chivalry - is a term related to the medieval institution of knighthood. It is usually associated with ideals of knightly virtues, honor and courtly love. The word is derived from the French word chevalier, indicating one who rides a horse (Fr. cheval), though the term has come to signify more than this'

actually, the Directors Father was in the polish clavary and was killed during war, so it was added in as a message against the russians (at least thats what My profesor told me in film class)

I thought there was no Chilltown!

See Andrei Tarkovsky's Andrei Rubljev which has nearly the exact same image of a white horse standing in the rain.

"A voice from behind me reminds me. Spread out your wings you are an angel."

It's definitely symbolic. I don't have much to say on it though apart from horses make a landscape more beautiful and a white horse is the closest we have to a unicorn.

EDIT: I think the horse is a harbinger of death and/or misfortune given when s/he appears in the film.

A bird sings and the mountain's silence deepens.
