Need help about an account from Rostron

I remember a show on TV a few years ago that I recorded, and at the very end of the broadcast, it had an account from Captain Rostron talking about one of the Titanic's lifeboats was found to be too full of passengers, and the order was given for someone to get out, and a young woman, a girl as he put it, offered to go down with the ship since she was not married and there were women there who were.

Does anyone know more info on this story?

I don't know if this is the story you are referring to or not, but here it is.

Miss Edith Evans, 36, of New York City, boarded the TITANIC as at Cherbourg, France, as a First Class Passenger. She became friends with a trio of sisters who were also traveling to the United States, as well as Colonel Archibald Gracie who had taken on the role as protector of the ladies, as they were travleing without their husbands. In the early morning of April 15, after all the main life boats were away and the collapsibles were being loaded, Colonel
Gracie led Miss Evans and her friend, Mrs. John Murray Brown to Collapsible D. There was only one space left in the life boat. Edith Evans turned to Mrs. Brown as said, "You go first. You have children waiting at home." Mrs. Brown was taken into the boat, and as it was lowered, one of the crewmen told Miss Evans that there was another boat that would take her. All the boats were gone, however, and Edith Evans was left on board to go down with the ship.

This scene is shown in A NIGHT TO REMEMBER, however, Edith Evans is portrayed as being much older than 36. It is interesting to note that before she embarked on the TITANIC, a fortune teller told Edith Evans to beware of water.

It's also theorized that she may have refused her seat in the lifeboat because of the fortune teller's advice (which was that she would die on the water, not to beware). She may have thought that the lifeboat would sink or capsize and she would die.

If that's true, it's one of THE 'doh!' moments in history.

That is probably the story. Thanks for the information.
