THE COVERED CART

Perhaps the most interesting prop in the film is that wheeled waiter's tray with a large silver cover on it.

After the ship had hit the iceberg, the pace of its sinking was measured by that cart's increasingly faster movements.

I believe that when it finally crashed into a shelf full of dishes, that the seriousness of the situation was realized.

Haunting, isn't it?

I noticed that tonight on TCM & it was very haunting.

One of my favorite scenes, actually. Near the beginning of the sinking, it only moves slightly, further in when the steerage passengers walk in, it moves a little further, and then finally only about 20 minutes left in the sinking it rolls across the entire room and smashes into a shelf. Really is haunting.
