Nazarin DVD (Yume)

Just wondering if anybody here has a copy of region 2 Yume DVD release of Nazarin, how is the quality is it watchable or is it as bad as their release of Ascent to Heaven?

reply

More than a year later, but after having watched a recently purchased copy of the region 2 Yume DVD release, I can answer your question. It's watchable, but not much more than that. The source was in pretty good shape, so there isn't too much obvious damage. They seem to have turned the "contrast" dial way up. The worst thing is that the left edge of the frame is cut off all the way through the film -- apparently their solution to 1.37:1 vs. 1:33:1 was to cut off the excess and hope that no one would notice. Well, someone did.

If the Nazarin DVD is any indication, Yume's bad reputation is well deserved. How did these people end up with the rights to films of masters like Bunuel and Kurosawa?
