Tedious for gentile audiences

This movie is for Danny Kaye fans and for those who care about Jewish refugees. The movie is predictable, slow-paced and lazily lifted from a verbose stage production.

All those people who find Danny Kaye to be tedious will know to avoid this film. Curt Jurgens is funnier than the star.

But there are some cameos from the fabulous Martita Hunt and the film's director in the final 3 seconds of the film

"...and for those who care about Jewish refugees"? Jamal-Nazreddin is apparently one of those who do not "care about Jewish refugees," and also apparently isn't aware of how tasteless his statement is.

^ Taste is in the mouth of the beholder.

I am an old codger of 82yrs and never found Danny Kaye to be tedious on the contrary he did some excellent work in his life time!

reply

Dear Lex, I'm glad to hear you're 82.

I liked it very much, and I'm a Gentile. It was overlong but got suspenseful toward the end. Some parts I found very moving. Jurgens was very good but I was very impressed by Kaye's performance. Also liked the suave, unprejudiced German officer played by Alexander Scourby.

I'm a German and a gentile and I loved this character and this movie.

The character Danny Kaye played was able to focus his attention on what was important. That is why he and his friends were still standing at the close of the film. The tricks he used along the way were so fun!

I am surprised and disappointed that this movie doesn't have a larger following. I enjoyed it very much.

Danny Kaye and Curd Jurgens are both excellent in this film. I have never associated the word "tedious" with Kaye. He could rung rings around many of the "puffed up" so called Stars of today. To be able to derive humour out of so many dangerous situations that he and the colonel find themselves in requires great skill
