A Great Film

Marjorie Morningstar was really a lovely film. It was underestimated at the time. It is a very sad story of a starstruck young lady getting involved with a song and dance man who can't make it big in show business and is unable to have a meaningful relationship. Marjorie finally realizes this at the end and moves on with her life. The scenes filmed at summer camp bring back fond memories to those of us who used to spend summers in the country. This film is worth watching and has not aged since 1958.

The film was so Jewish without ever using the word* --I think-- that I'm somewhat surprised they got it made. In some ways it must have been foreign to much of the country.
It would have been much more daring in the late '50's. In that sense it's dated in the 21st century. But it was still enjoyable on several levels and worth examining as a period piece.

* at the club Mrs. Morgenstern refers to the "UJA" - United Jewish Appeal.

I think it is a very special movie and don't agree with the folks who call it dated. It's very much a period piece. Natalie Wood and Gene Kelly -- Noel and Marjorie -- don't we all remember our lost loves?

very good and underrated

Gene Kelly proved himself as beyond a song-and-dance man. He had great dramatic presence as a man with conflicting attitudes. As for Natalie Wood, wow! She was extremely attractive. No wonder many males were besotted with her. Though certainly more than a pretty face, Wood brought vulnerability to Marjorie.

"I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not".

Natalie was quite strong in the lead and Kelly gets criticism for his "Noel" I think a bit unfairly.
Maybe because he was too old or not Jewish but after you have seen him go through his moods and attitudes you really can't picuture someone else doing the part with all it calls for.
