Puzzling plot point

Forget the hard-to-swallow coincidence of Cooper stumbling upon the house of horrors from his youth in the vast open West. Why, knowing the evil that may still lurk within, does he lead himself and the two others into Hell instead of just moving on?

Because they had just missed the train (which the annoying guy tells us only goes by once a week) and because they're 100 miles from the closest town with no horse, water, or food. Cooper, healthy, has little chance of making that distance given the circumstances. The other injured guy, or the woman in the high heels, would have died. I don't think Cooper's character was happy to bring them in, but he also didn't know if those criminals were around [only after stashing the 2 he was traveling with does he investigate the cabin - seemingly in hopes of finding it empty].

I don't think it was such a coincidence. This area was established as an old haunt of Dock's gang, so he and Link would've known the area well. Both groups would've naturally therefore gone to the nearest shelter. If they'd got off the train at a different point, they'd have both have crossed paths at another shelter.

I know you are, you said you are, but what am I?

I would say Link could not know that Dock's gang had attempted to rob the train since Dock himself was not taking part in it. Their "base" could not be very far away. The gang could not get off the train at a different point and Link's party could not get stranded at a different point either since it was a consequence of the attempted robbery.

***Spoiler Below***

This was even more puzzling. After Link (Cooper) killed the bad guy in town he left the body in the middle of the road. I would have stripped his pistol and ammunition belt, dumped him in a shack and ambushed the next two guys as they rode into town. Leaving the body out eliminated the element of surprise and alerted that trouble was afoot.

It's not puzzling. It's just that the character isn't a coward.
