In praise of Katrina

I've always considered Katrina van Tassel, in Disney's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, to be the most beautiful character that Disney ever created.

I recently read a great essay in praise of Katrina. I agree with every word:

Briar Rose (Aurora) from Sleeping Beauty is the most gorgeous princess, of course. But there's just something about the softness of Katrina's look that makes her even prettier. I wish she were better known.

I have to appreciate praise like that since I have Van Tassel ancestry.

She was super pretty.
I on the other hand prefer Esmeralda.

Maybe I am a gold digging ho,,,,,ok,,what else?

Esmeralda is EASILY the strongest, most erotic and magnetic of all the Disney women, by far. She is so powerful that she puts off the Nancy boys, who bring Nancy boys, cling to the internet like a diaper. Put Esmeralda on the same stage with Jessica Rabbit and make the ludicrous comparison empirically. I LOVE pulchritude (Jessica); but I’m a slave to fire (Esmeralda).

Gotta admit I'm a little weirded out by that. The entire forum was dedicated to admiring "plus-size" women, so I immediately understood the context in which Katrina was going to be viewed, but...huh? The ONLY thing plus-size and "plump" about her is her ample bosom! :P I'm all for larger girls being better represented, but in no way does Katrina stand for those girls. You've kinda got to be a so-called "chubby chaser" to have the fantasy vision of her uncorseted waist being wide. :/ I doubt anyone else would even think of such an unlikely possibility.

Now if you want to really talk about "curvy, soft, plus-size" gals, look no further than the sweet, short little black-haired lady that Brom initially shunned but later tried to swap for Katrina at the dance!! Honestly...if that was their point, why did they focus on the traditionally pretty, passive, demure, coy coquette who looks scarcely "plumper" than any other lady who's designed to be lovely? Why not even mention the actual big girl? Because she's "ugly," unlike their breathtaking man-magnet Katrina??

And while she's kind to Ichabod, I'd hardly consider her a great role model. o.O ;p

I agree with every word. Katrina is Disney's most beautiful princess ever (even though she isn't technically a princess -- but in her station of life, she's more like a princess than most actual princesses).

I really like her character too; neither a conventional goody-goody nor a bad person either. Complex and realistic.

I always thought that Beauty and The Beast (1991) also borrowed a little from The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow (1949).
