How did Sinatra find out about Curtis' foul intentions?

There was a scene that Sinatra had with another officer that explained Tony Curtis' intentions not to marry Natalie Wood. I missed that scene and was confused how Sinatra discovered Curtis was a lying jerk. Can anyone help me out?

Curtis had previously taken out official army paperwork to apply for permission to marry Wood. Curtis told Sinatra that he had finished filling out the paperwork and had submitted it to the clerk for processing up the chain of command, that he could get married as soon as the paperwork came back. Wood and Sinatra were both waiting for Curtis to tell them when the paperwork had been approved.

Sinatra stopped by the company clerk's office on other business and asked about the paperwork. The clerk told him that Curtis had picked up the forms weeks ago but had NEVER submitted them for approval. Sinatra realized that Curtis had been lying about waiting for the paperwork to be approved.

Also when the clerk told Sinatra that Curtis had picked up the paper work but had never returned it, the clerk said that Curtis told him that it was all just a gag.

Ohhh...so that's why Frank punched him.
