Did they end up together at the end?

Unfortunately, my DVR failed me on the last 30 minutes. I've heard things that suggest Frank Sinatra and Natalie Wood's characters seemed to be on the path to marriage at the end, and then I've also heard that the ending is much more ambiguous. I'm not sure which interpretation is accurate, so it'd be nice if someone who has seen the movie could fill me in on what I missed regarding the resolution of their relationship.

They meet again at the end, but the story ends on an ambiguous note.

They have Sam (Sinatra) in voice-over say that he contacted his business partner in L.A. and told him he'd be there in three weeks. He then talks about getting two letters from Monique (Woods), one where she mentions hearing that Harris (Curtis) had died, and one telling Sam her mother had died. He stopped by the house, met the little boy he had given the toy to, then the boy took him inside to Monique. She was running a school for orphaned children out of her home. It ends with the class singing a song to Sam. It is, as the previous respondent said, a bit ambiguous, but I felt that Sam and Monique would part as friends and he would be going back to L.A. alone.
