Much, MUCH better than Star Wars

Before I start, I just want to say: I don't hate Star Wars. I respect why people like it so much (and I think it's great that so many people can respect it in the same way). I just think it's a bit overated.

Now, George Lucas has clearly said that he's taken influence from this and other movies. This movie is so much better than Star Wars (partially because Toshiro Mifune is a badass in this). But I just think the comedy's better, and the direction. It's just more interesting to me.

Again, I'm more of a Kurosawa fan than a Lucas fan, but I still like Star Wars. Does anyone else agree?

I just watched the movie and I agree. I'm in the same boat. I really like the Star Wars films but if I had to choose I'd watch this movie over them.

The Hidden Fortress is hilarious and suspenseful. I think my friends would love it as well if they could get over the fact that it's in Japanese.

Why even compare the two? I know George Lucas was inspired by the movie and all, but they're hardly similar. Aside from the fact that there's a princess and C-3P0 and R2-D2 were loosely inspired by the two idiots, the movies aren't much alike.

reply

Loosely inspired?

Two idiots. One short one tall, one talks like they are in charge, are stranded in a desert, after a battle between two warring factions.

They decide to just walk to salvation.

They get captured and become slaves.

They come across a princess who needs saving.

Screen transitions left right and center.

The General looking after the Princess is totally Han / Chewie / Obi rolled into one.

Jesus when the droids are in the desert it's almost a shot for shot remake. If you've only seen Youtube trailers for The Hidden Fortress or read a synopsis , then no It might not seem like Star Wars. If you watch the whole thing you'll see it instantly.

Star Wars is better, but Hidden Fortress is still great. Both destroy The Force Awakens.

The beginning is VERY similar. But after that the two diverge into very separate entities. I like a lot about this film, but I would much rather be watching star wars and overall I find star wars to be the more enjoyable film. This is not one of my favorite Kurowasawa films. Seven Samurai and Yojimba are much better.
