The clans - real?

Were the Akizuki, Yamana, and Hayakawa really clans in 16th century feudal Japan, or are they fictional? I've no historical reference, so wanted to ask if anybody knew?

I just found some info on Wiki, if anyone is interested:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_clans

There's a whole chapter dedicated to the Yamana clan, who were clearly one of the biggest (therefore easily kicking Akizuki clan behind?) They're also depicted in the film as a fairly cruel clan, putting all those peasants to work without pay, and shaming their generals. I wonder how true this was compared to reality?

Akizuki clan gets mentioned on wiki, but it doesn't have any info.

And Hayakawa aren't mentioned at all, but I'm guessing they existed in some form?
