How did they get the gold into the sticks?

Perhaps I missed something, did the sticks fit together? If so, why bother breaking them if you could just pull them apart? How? Why? Where, and who?

A rough guess; maybe the gold was melted and poured into the sticks while in molten form. That would probably set the sticks on fire though, but maybe there was a clay mold inside to protect them.

It's also more likely that the gold was smelted into that form and then inserted into an opening in each stick, or the sticks were just hollowed out before hand in such a way that you couldn't tell it had been taken apart.

The process of putting the gold into the sticks couldn't have involved melting it, because when the bars were removed they still had the royal crest/seal on them.

I think that they had carved a hole through the stick and made it hollow. Then they´d insert the gold into it and sealed with some smaller chip of wood and some kind of glue. It´s not that hard to do if you think about it. And, as someone noted, the japanese are known for their patience...

maybe the gold was melted. microwaved is my guess.

Just put it on the Underhill's tab.

As wood is living, they could have made a small opening in a tree branch, put the gold in and wait till it's grown closed. Then cut the branch. Takes some time, but Japanese have a lot of patience.
There's a lot of stuff in trees, even stuff that was just close by:

Are you sure it works that way? According to my information, trees do not grow inwards, so the hole would never 'grow closed'. Trees and tree branches grow by adding layers, not by stretching or 'ingrowing. There is no reason why a tree should be able to grow in any other way. If a branch is at a certain place on a tree, it will always be at the same exact height, and when the branch grows, it gains thickness by adding layers on the OUTER part of the branch, and by 'adding material' lengthwise to the previous length, not by changing shape or stretching - also not by bloating like a feminist.

So as I understand it, THAT plan would never work!

The only way it could work the way shown in the movie is that they take the sticks, they make them 'openable, then they carve the trees from the inside to match the gold, and then simply insert the gold, and then seal them before closing, so they stay closed, and from the outside, it would look seamless (although there is a seam). You can see them opening one of the sticks when he shows it to the guard - I think that's the best place where you can see how the sticks are hollowed out.

It's kind of ridiculous though, that such small pieces of gold are concealed in such huge sticks - proportionally and practically thinking, it wouldn't make any sense. Bigger gold bars or smaller sticks would be way more sensible in any case.

But this was not that good a movie anyway, so it doesn't really warrant this much pondering.

The thing is, they wouldn't really have to bother breaking the sticks so violently and frantically, all they would have to do is check whether the sticks are "openable" or not. If not, move on to the next stick.

HOW DARE YOU!!!

Easy. Slit the wood to half way through, stick the wood into hot water for a couple of hours, push the gold bar into the wood and let it cool. The split will close up and once the wood dries out, it will look like any piece of cut firewood. Hiding the wood in the cold water of the spring, won't open the slits.

I was wondering the same when I was watching. There's no way they poured liquid gold into tree branches.

how do they get caramel into caramilk bars? HOOOOOW!!!
