Unwatchable DVD

Just FYI - I was very disappointed this evening when I tried to play the DVD of Jalsaghar I obtained from Netflix. Not only is it taken from a terrible print, but it is WAY overly bright and, consequently, it is impossible to read at least 1/3 of the subtitles (the film is in Bengali). At some point, the subtitle people put some of the subtitles in black - but only, it seems when the background is about to go dark -- so many of those THOSE subtitles are illegible. I gave up after about 15 minutes. Very sad.

Does anyone know if the VHS copies have this same problem?

Just to answer my own question - I got my hands on the the Sony Pictures VHS version (the Merchant and Ivory Foundation restoration) and it was lovely.

I have a French dvd (available for instance at cdiscount.com for a few euros - Le Salon de Musique). I had no trouble with it at all and it has subtitling in either French or English.

Yeah, I just got this from Netflix, my first Ray film, popped it in, and...what the f-ck?!!

I looks like an awful VHS rip or something. I'll wait to see it some other time so my appreciation of the film itself isn't hampered by the quality. I'm so glad I'm not alone in having this problem.

Why is it that a world renown director has his films distributed by hacks? And to have that logo in the upper right hand corner of the screen during the whole film, that just galls!

Please, someone who knows what they are doing, buy up Ray's films (I've heard many others are in similar shape).

fyi - I just watched the DVD I got from Netflix today and it is still the cheap, knockoff version with the logo superimposed over the upper right.

"My name is Paikea Apirana, and I come from a long line of chiefs stretching all the way back to the Whale Rider."

I don't know what Netflix is doing, but I just watched the new Criterion Blu-ray, and the film looked very good. However, it's not what I'd call an excellent version--there are many, many scratches that are very visible--but mostly the image is clear and fairly sharp, for a film of that era.
