Perception of Russians at Polish court

I remember that in one scene at the Polish court, someone says
that they should "drive the Russians back into Asia".
There was also a woman who claimed that the Moscovites eat their babies.

I know a little bit about Polish-Russian rivalry, but were things like that really said/believed in 16th century Poland?

I'm not sure about what happened back then ? I do know that it was common urban legend that "Comunists eat little children".
Considering the political and critical undertone Eisenstein gave the film, I was under the impression that he was mocking this pre-conception.
