Unresolved romance

I thought it was kind of unusual that they didn't have a "final reunion" between the two leads. Certainly most movies would have ended with their joyful reunion back at home. Although I don't really have a problem with this, it did make me feel that the romance was a bit unresolved; after all, we never learn for certain whether Lin (or whatever his name is) actually survives for Jen-Ai's return. My question is, was this supposed to be a given? Is this supposed to be a completely happy ending, or did they want the ambiguity?

I know that there was really never a romance in the life of Gladys Aylward...

Untrue. The Small Woman by Alan Burgess, a book based on Gladys' reminiscences, goes into detail about Linnan, a Chinese soldier that she fell in love with. He proposed to her but she refused, worried about the effect of an interracial marriage on any children they might have. Linnan went back to the fighting and Gladys never saw him again and never even found out what finally happened to him. I don't know why people have a problem with Gladys having a love affair-is it because she was a missionary? A white woman in love with a Chinese man? What is it that makes people reject this very important part of Gladys' life?
