Split-Sreen 'Bedroom' Scene

I thought that was so cool...would that have been the first time a film used such a special effect? I know about 10 years later "The Thomas Crown Affair" would take it to far greater lengths.

Split Screens have been around since the beginnings of cinema.
They were possibly invented by George Melies who mainly used them for effects where the split was disguised from the audience, e.g. Un Homme de tete, 1898. Having said that it is almost impossible to say who invented what, especially as so many films from the period are lost.
By at least 1903, in films like The Life of an American Fireman, split screens were being used as a stylistic device, very much like Indiscreet, where two or more related scenes are on the screen at once.

Incidentally, it is common to suggest that audiences of the time were largely resistant to new ideas (often based on the odd rant from a conservative critic). If one looks at the rapid speed of change and innovation in popular films in the early years of cinema this is demonstrably false.

"the odd rant from a conservative critic"

Most of the people I have encountered who have the delusion that people of the past were naive and resistant to new ideas are younger and brainwashed into mindless liberalism. Conservatism has nothing to do with it. On the contrary, conservatism seems to be correlated with maturity and a higher level of education and awareness. In another word--wisdom.

See "Down With Love" for a great spoof of the use of split screens.
