When she invites Cary over for lunch because she loves cooking and its her hobby, I thought she would prepare a fab lunch but it looked just like a turned over egg with juice.

That is probably because she was making him breakfast and not lunch.

It is breakfast because clearly they have spent the night together, but the censorship of the day had to establish that he has gone home (hence the quick "I'll be right over" telephone call) and when he gets there the breakfast scene is written and played like a "morning after" scene, but I guess Hollywood at the time didn't think audeinces could handle the fact hat two forty-somethings had a roll in the hay - even two gorgeous specimens like Bergman and Grant. This whole movie is a crock.

CORRECTION: Grant was 55 and Bergman was 52 when this film was released in 1958.

IMDb lists her as having been born in 1915, so she'd be 43 in 1958.

It was lunch. Yes, they spent the night together, and wouldn't have woken up early the next morning. He invited her for lunch, because it was already too late for breakfast when he phoned her. Then they both had to shower, and get ready---remember, he wasn't living downstairs then, either. Today I'm sure they would use the term "brunch;" but in the movie, clearly lunch was the right term for the meal.

I agree with the implication that this was a "breakfast" after their night of love-making, regardless of the fact that he went home in between. He said in the phone call that he was just thinking of getting up to shower and shave to take her to lunch (so we know they both slept very late).

It wasn't about her wanting to cook; it was about her wanting to be alone with him, wanting the privacy for whatever might happen.

What I love about this movie is that there is so much passion, even sex, that never has to be show. Just like Hitchcock's horror movie Psycho that represented violence without actually showing it. That walk home from the restaurant, then the ride in the elevator, where both are thinking of nothing but kissing the other, touching eachother, and more, much more. And then their coming together is all represented by that closed door. So much more sexy than showing two people having sex.

Umm no, I don't think a closed door is sexier than watching people have sex. I take your point that the door forces us to use our imaginations, but I would have liked to see some kissing and stuff....

but then high-class actors like Grant and Bergman wouldn't do stuff like that.

What did you want? An extended montage of vegetable chopping set to music, like in some damned food movie? What she makes just doesn't matter.
