Technically Brilliant!

I checked this out one day and watch it that evening and I will say was impressed with all the tech stuff. The camerawork and lighting was excellent setting the appropriate mood for the story. Also when the aliens take over the bodies of the men I liked how they used super imposed black smoke and for 1958 I was impressed with the special effects in an age now where everything is digital and ultra realistic.

The smoke effects and some of the other SFX were quite advanced for the time.

But they really handled the "day for night" stuff in a lame way. There are some scenes, such as the one near the beginning with the near-accident, that are supposed to be night scenes but appear to be full daylight.

Also the scene where the wife is wandering at night. When she's at the bar it's very dark, but in her neighborhood it's daylight (but supposed to be night).

Talk about FX you know an easy way to make a ray gun effect is to place a scatch
in the film neg and keep making it longer and longer, frame by frame

Although the budget was low, this was still a film from a major studio (Paramount) and big studios had a lot more resources than the smaller ones.
