Strange Introduction text

It described the trial of 1892 as a "Brave" moment in the history of France. Rather bizarre, as it was a "shameful" moment rather than brave. Anyone know anything that would explain this aberration.

The movie is based on the book by Nicholas Halasz,
an American scholar of Hungarian origin.
It was he who characterized the case as "admirable",
for the people of all walks of life - the military included -
in France, who rose against the powerful military caste in defense
of a, because of his race, wrongfully accused man.
The title is taken from a pamphlet by writer Emile Zola, indicting
the military so heavily that he almost got lynched by the mob.
Free people who think for themselves are never afraid to take sides
even at the cost of division.
Such is Democracy' s lot.

Could one imagine such a thing happening in the Soviet Union ?
