So-called 'rap' scene, not original.

T he so called "rap" song / dialog between the chick singer and Jackie Coogan's band in Coogan's club is not original to this film. I t was a part of black actor Stepin' Fetchit's vaudeville / night club stage routine, and performed in at least one of his appearances in a 30's or '40's "all black cast / race film".

REallY? To me it sounded a lot like Jack Kerouac material. Does anyone know the woman's name who recites the song?

reply

IMDB has: Phillipa Fallon ... Poetess (uncredited)

Cool, Thanks.

And J.I.'s "Columbus for the hep" sounded an awful lot like a Lord Buckley routine...

The style also sounded a lot like Andy Griffith's version of Romeo & Juliet which he tells to Opie in an episode of his sitcom. It was a part of Griffith's stand-up act.

phillipa suggests in this song that you might want to "swing with a gassy chick"
