I'm very much into classic lorries, and I love the kew dodges used in this film. some people have even spoken of making replicas of those used in the film- which poses the question, what colour would you paint them?

Locations:

Mentioned on another site (can't remember which) was Ford Airport near Arundel. This area is now an industrial estate. Shoreham has also been mentioned in the Britmovie Forums. However, most of the driving scenes were shot close to Pinewood Studios, Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire, the Colnbrook Bypass, Buckinghamshire, and Stanwell Moor, Middlesex.

Colour of trucks:

I would think that the livery on those trucks was (as near as dammit) red oxide with the name in cream or white lettering. I can't find anyone old enough in the film industry to confirm this and I bet nobody else can!

Goofs:

*May contain spoilers*

During the chase scene, Stanley Baker was driving a truck with a wire spoked steering wheel. He was forced into a fence post hanging over the edge of a quarry. As our dazed hero staggers out of his truck and watches it drop into the quarry, the steering wheel has solid spokes.

I would also like to know how Patrick McGoohan could get into a punch up and the cigarette stays in his mouth all the time. The only time you see it fall out of his mouth is when his nobbled brakes fail and he drives "over the edge" at the quarry.

When Red's truck goes over the edge, slow down the tape or pause and do frame-by frame. The stunt driver can be clearly seen doing a magnificent dive from the cab just prior to the inevitable explosion.

Great cult film - ordered the collector's edition (out today) from Network UK last Friday. Lots of extras and a good price too.

watch again, if thats a stunt man then WOOAAAHHH
its a dummy.

agree though GREAT film.

reply

Yes the trucks are shown as red on the current DVD release presumably based on original publicity material. Talking of locations does anyone know where the town is where Stanley Baker visits his brother?

reply

The sound man on the film recalls the Dodge trucks having a bottle green livery. Other people have also said the same thing

reply

green i would agree

I'm a Trolleybus enthususiast - I can only guess it's somewhere in North London but, couldn't read the number on the Trolleybus. That scene was too short for me and, the electric whine as the 'bus pulled away brought back some memories!

reply

The scene in the high street is in Brentford west London.

On you tube, if you type in Brentford trolley buses there is some good film there of trolley buses in the fifties.

according to "classic and vintage commercial" magazine, The ex-fleet manager of WW Drinkwater of willesden (who owned the Kew dodges used in the film)reckons the Trucks were indeed Green, later changing to Blue. all I have to do now is find myself a SWB Perkins P6 powered parrot nosed dodge and I am in business

reply

The trolley bus is 1952 LYH880 operating route 657 to Hounslow from Shepherd's Bush, so must be travelling west through Brentford. In 1961, it was exported to Spain. The newsagent Tom goes into to see his brother is that of George Adnams. Next door at number 330, there's a glimpse of undertakers W G Barratt; founded 1781. Behind the trolley bus are the buildings of the former Brentford Gaslight and Coke Co.

most of the driving scenes were shot at moor lane between staines and colnbrook

reply

Just Google mapped "moor lane between staines and colnbrook England", went to street view, and "drove" a bit. I felt like one of the Hell Drivers (who only made 1/2 trip a day)!
