Van Heflin great in the lead. DVR'ed this off Encore Westerns and was so glad I did. Love finding movies like this.

Van Heflin was screen magic.the crying scene at the end was beyond sadness.
There are NO actors of this type around now...former soldiers/first generation,
tough, poor men who lived through a WW2 that Truman pushed us into.Did not have to
happen....hundreds of thousands of Caucasian Men dead on both sides for nothing.
I cannot forget what a Golden Time it was for movie go-- ers.

I totally agree
Thanks to encore westerns
I had never seen this movie until now

Yes, excellent acting, directing built on a terrific plot. I've seen around 500 westerns and this one I put among the best ever. I can't believe it has so little votes, incredibly sidelined.

reply

Definitely one of the best! I just saw it last night. Some shocking moments had me saying, "OH MY GOD!" I cried at the end and was still wiping tears away five minutes after it ended.

Mag, Darling, you're being a bore.

What a great movie and Van Heflin gave a tremendous and convincing performance as Lee.

Bought it on blu ray and watched it twice now, one of the best westerns I have seen, up there with high noon for sure

This is without question one of the greatest Westerns ever. Van Heflin who starred in two of the acknowledged best ( Shane and 3:10 To Yuma) really excels here. The ending is the best where Lee Hackett ( Heflin) finally takes responsibility for the enabling of the actions of his sociopathic son Ed ( Tab Hunter), and is forced to kill him in a duel. Then when he breaks down and cries and his other son (James Darren) and his half Indian girlfriend ( Kathryn Grant), help him walk down the street you see a chance for redemption and happy ending for Lee ( something you do not see for bigoted hard men like Ethan ( John Wayne) in The Searchers and especially Lassiter ( Richard Boone) in Rio Conchos). A very powerful movie
