When did movie take place?

Movie initially seems to mirror era in which book on which it was based was published--all clothes, cars, behavior ("innocently" kidnaping an albino, etc. appear to reflect Hollywood-ized version of early Thirties/Great Depression as experienced by bunch of southern hillbillies). But halfway through film, characters drive into town and streets are filled with mid-Fifties cars, Eisenhower era beer signs, etc. Were audiences supposed to believe that these characters were living in huge time warp or just assume that production budget wasn't big enough to redress major locales in period decor? In any event, confusing.

I think the movie took place in 1958 which was the year it was made. The book was set during the 30s when the Great Depression was taking place.

Have never read the book but there is no reason to believe the movie is not set in the contemporary (1958) day. Time moves much less fast in the rural South than other areas even today so 1950's Georgia wouldn't have been much different form 1930's Georgia for most of the state. I'm quite sure there were plenty of people in Georgia still this earthy in the 1950's, I'm sure there are still plenty of people this earthy in 2013 in and out of the South.
