Not In This Century???

In the introductory narration, Honoree says that it is 1900, and that he was not born in "this" century, obviously meaning the 20th. In fact, 1900 is not the first year of the 20th century, but rather the last of the 19th. Centuries and decades start with the year ONE, and end with the year ZERO: 1901-10, 1911-20, 1921-30, 1931-40, 1941-50, 1951-60, 1961-70, 1971-80, 1981-90, 1991-2000. The 21st century started on 1 January 2001, and it will end on 31 December 2100.

"Nobody likes a math geek, Scully."

~Fox Mulder

reply

That's quite a compliment for someone who was clinically diagnosed as suffering of dyscalculea.

reply

Are you speaking of Mulder, or Scully? Or of me? I have never seen a physician for that disorder, so if you are speaking of me, you are mistaken.

reply

Upon further reflection (in the shower), I realized from the structure of your sentence that you were talking not about me or Mulder or Scully, but about yourself. So, I stand corrected. Or something like that. Unless I'm wrong. Good show, sir (or madam)!

This made me smile. :)

Actually the 1900 is the start of the 20th century. think of this the 1500s were the 16th century. The 1600s were the 17th century the 1700s was the 18th century, and the 1800s were the 19th century.

No.

There was no year 0.

You do the math.

I don't know if it's "really wacky," but your French is coming along.

reply

Just because there is no year 0 doesn't count since 1AD is the first "First Century" and the century we are in is the 21st century.

when the Pomempi incident happen in 79AD that is the first Century. The first year with 100s is the 2nd century. 200s= 3rd century 300s=4th, 400s=5th century, 500s=6th cenutry 600s=7th cenutry, 700s=8th cenutry, 800s=9th cenutry, 900s=10th 1000s=11 century, 1100s the 12th cenutry 1200s=13th cenutry, 1300s=14 century, 1400s=15th century, 1500s=16th cenutry, the 1600s=17 cenutry, the 1700s=the 18thcenuty, the 1800s=19th century, the 1900s=20th cenutry. 2000s=21st century (which we are currently in).

Yes.

1 AD is the first year of the first century.
100 AD is the hundredth (final) year of the 1st century.

1800 is the hundredth (final) year of the 18th century.

1801 is the first year of the 19th century.
1900 is the hundredth (final) year of the 19th century

1901 is the first year of the 20th century.
2000 is the hundredth (final) year of the 20th century

2001 is the first year of the 21st century.
2100 will be hundredth (final) year of the 21st century

I am not sure why you cannot understand this concept. Perhaps if you actually count the years one by one and keep track of each time you reach 100.

I was saying basically what you were saying but YOU are the one who have it wrong. But actually 1901 wasn't the start of the 20th century. If it was there weren't have been a big deal in 1889 about it turning into a new century. Something which got repeated in 1999. 1st Century is the one which is just plan numbers 1st century is 1-99 but after 99, the 100-199=2nd century, 200-299=3rd century, 300-399=4th century, 400=499s=5th century 500-599=6th cenutry, 600-699=7th cenutry 700-799=8th century, 800s-899=9th century, 900-999=10thh century, 1000-1099=11th century 1100-1199=12th century, 1200-1299=13th century 1300-1399=14th century 1400-1499=15th century, 1500s-1599=16th century 1600-1699=17th century, 1700-1799=18th century, 1800-1899=19th century, 1900s-1999=20th century. 2000- is 21st century
