This over Vertigo? Wow!

Not a troll here, just completely flabbergasted that this film won for best picture, while a masterpiece like 'Vertigo' was completely ignored. Don't get me wrong, the film was enjoyable, but not enough to deserve such an award.

But in the end, there's some justice after all. 'Vertigo' had the last laugh. It's finally recognized as the timeless and complex masterpiece that it is; a work of art that will live on forever, that has influenced so many films, so many directors.

This average musical, honestly, nothing memorable at all, not even the song numbers, too forced, too lazy almost. The cinematography was interesting, as were the sets and costumes. It's lazy entertainment. :o)

Great musicals to me are "Meet me in St. Louis," "Swingtime," "Top Hat," "Singin' in the rain,"

Glad you shared that with all of us.

"Vertigo" bored me stiff, when I finally saw it, well into my 40s. And I have nothing against Hitchcock, as his "North by Northwest" the following year is one of my top ten all-time favorites. But his 1958 opus was pretentious and utterly self-conscious of his striving for "art."

"Gigi," on the other hand, I saw in my teens, over 30 years ago, and I've loved it ever since. From the songs to the casting to the costumes to the Paris locations to the byplay, sexual and otherwise (and, yes, a courtesan is not the same as a prostitute — see "Dangerous Beauty").

For just under two hours last night, I actually could insert a disc and escape both the 20th AND the 21st Centuries. What a blessed respite. What a charmed device. Thank you, Minnelli, Freed, and Colette — and the inventors of home video.

'Vertigo' is a thinking picture; 'Gigi' is a lazy picture; both enjoyable in their own ways.

You are an idiot. BOTH films are masterpieces, and you can't compare
a Vincente Minnelli film to a Hitchcock film.

The problem is the Oscars themselves, which mean zip. Unless every
director is directing the exact same film, and every actor is playing
the very same role, how can one say one piece of art is better than
another?

"The Matrix" is a lazy picture, you fool. "Gigi" is timeless and
endearing. And personal.

Any talented director out of film school could go out right now and
make a carbon copy of something like "The Matrix." And thousands of
other films. "Gigi" and "Vertigo" are BOTH unique.

Vertigo is an absolutely horrible movie. The pacing is so slow, it makes the entire movie dysfunctional.

And I'm a Alfred Hithcock fan.
