The Other GiGi

I love this movie and have enjoyed watching it for some time now.

about a year ago I had the pleasure of watching another version of this movie, filmed in France of an entire cast of French actors in French. (I saw it with english sub-titles that were at times hard to read) it was a black and white movie that had been made while this version was in post production.

an introduction to the movie stated that MGM bought the movie after it was made so that it would never be aired because they were making this version which I found interesting.

Anyhow, the movie was quite good and I enjoyed it a great deal despite the fact that it was obviously made on a much smaller budget.

It almost seems a shame that it hasn't ever been released to the public I think other GiGi fans would also have enjoyed watching it as well.

(I watched in on TCM at 1 in the morning so I don't think it reached a lot of fans)

...I seem to recall it being shown in New York in the 90s theatrically ( Just in a small art-/revival house or two , of course !!! ) , and , TCM showed it , so.........It seemed that the title search didn't list it , good to see someone else remembering it !
I think that the French version had a short release in France ( Belgium ? Quebec ? Colette's partial ancestral home , Martinique ? Ivory Coast ? Haiti ? Etc. )

I just saw this the other night; very interesting. Some of the scenes in the 1958 version were almost shot-for-shot remakes of this one. It was stated at the beginning that this was yet another film that a major studio secured the rights to in order to keep it from competing with their version. It's a shame; I often wonder how many times that was done...

We make an Idol of our fear, and call it God...

We saw it long ago at a film festival at Lincoln Center. One of the things I remember is that the Aunt Alicia in both movies were dead ringers for each other.
