That room is awfully red

Not just the walls, but then they repeat the color on the tablecloth.

Is the subtext that it's a red light district?

Can you imagine living in such a room every day?

I always figured it was meant to reference a certain work of art.

Yes, certainly, but why should the film want to reference that?

reply

why not?

It doesn't even have to reference anything; remember that these cinemascope films where HUMONGOUS attractions to theatregoers (their version of 3D Imax blah-blah or whatever the latest craze is to-day.

Putting these huge amounts of colour was a way to "blow their minds" and show something other films couldn't - especially since the majority of films - even at this time - were still mostly black and white.

I like the idea, though, that inspiration was garnered from the painting.

It also works as a trick. You can still have rich and bright colours, but because the pallet of the entire scene is still mostly monochromatic, the actors and props and such stand out much more; making you focus on them.

Yes...it IS a LOT of red!

The director loved that shade, and also bright yellow. He uses those two colors in many of his films.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.

It looks great. Love those deep/saturated colors in technicolor.
