Doesn't quite work

Lauren Bacall is a beautiful and stylish actress, one of my favorites. But she is not warm and fuzzy and there are scenes in this movie that call for that and she just doesn't make me believe. Evelyn Rudie is creepy somehow. Sentimental Journey was better. Work your way through it if you can, but it is a challenge.

Your point on Bacall in this film is well taken. The whole film, seen today, is just way too uncomfortable to watch despite the gloss that Fox gave it. SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY was the same way, with Connie Marshall's part as badly written as Rudie's. Neither is to blame. Ditto John Payne and Robert Stack (who are both favorites of mine).

I'm watching it right now. Robert Stack's character doesn't hear bells ringing, people knocking on the door? They come into the room and he doesn't realize it? No one is that absent minded (like the Absent Minded Professor). They make him out to be this ridiculous person who is so absorbed in his work he doesn't react to ANYTHING?

So stupid it's beyond comprehension. I liked the other version better
