FIND TEN MISTAKES

O K "Giant from the Unknown" fans. (Don't hide, I know you're out there)

Although many enjoy this move (me included) One has to admit, there are enough goofs here to make Ed Wood proud -

I noticed that there are no Goofs listed in this films IMDb entry so - lets list some goofs for all the world to see. Now - I said ten in the subject line but it may not be difficult to find more and that's fine. SO LET'S DUST OFF THAT INEXPENSIVE BUT REALLY WEL MASTERED DVD COPY OF "GIANT FROM THE UNKNOWN"

Since this board doesn't seem to get frequented a lot, I see no harm in anyone pointing out a couple of goofs if they like. I'm listing just one to get the ball rolling and I'll start off with an easy one:

Janet and Wayne go off by themselves to have a chat. The scene takes place in front of a lake. Trouble is, the lake is merely a large background photo and the ripples on the surface remain frozen in place for the whole scene (some 5 to 10 min).

Funny - I guess this was a "budget" issue, but it almost seems it would've been cheaper to find a real lake to film that scene in front of. (I guess that's why I'm not a film director)

LOL! Can tell from your tone that you are also a big fan of these fun flicks. Once these movies get in your blood, they are like diabetes. They are in your life to stay!

Not really a mistake, but for most of the movie the sheriff works alone. Maybe he is a near-indestuctible cyborg.

I AM a big fan of these movies. Now, I do like the classy movies too but movies like this can be a real treat.

Some of the other movies I own which many would consider BAD:

The Monster of Piedras Blancas
Killers from Space
Unknown World
Incredible Petrified World
The Monolith Monsters
This is Not a Test
Fiend Without a Face
Earth vs the Spider
The Lost Missile
12 to the Moon
The Flesh Eaters
The Hypnotic Eye

This is by no means a complete list but YES I delicately have a soft spot for these

On the other side of the coin, I also have films like:

2001 A Space Odyssey
Vampyr
Koyaanisqatsi
High Noon
Quest For Fire
Fantastic Planet
Dr Strangelove
Excalibur
The Haunting (1963 of course)
Fantasia
Lord of the Rings

And a few hundred others, so no telling what's gonna show up on my picture tube.

My favorite from your list is The Flesh Eaters. Ironic that Martin Kosleck made lots of movies after WW2 in which he portrayed Nazis.

I have William Castle's Project X(1968). Very busy plot. No 20th century weapons or technology except for a psychological intervention. A lot of futuristic devices. The animation sequence is not very good. Christopher George's spy character is sent deep into China. Hilarious that he freely moves about as an Occidental.

Also have George Pal's The Power(1967). Excellent and different.

The Bamboo Saucer(1967) is a tad rascist against Asians as the Americans and Russians "naturally" unite against the Chinese(funny in that most Russians in fact are Eurasians).

Man Without A Body(1958) is hilarious.

The Sorcerors(1967) is excellent. Boris is involved but very immobilized throughout.

Beauty And The Beast(1962) with Michael Pate and Merry Anders. Beautiful color reminiscent of The Magic Sword.

The Snow Devils(1965) is goofy but fun.

Seconds(1966) with an awesome performance by Rock Hudson.

Crack In The World(1965) is very good except for the fact that Dana Andrews' character is a an bore.

Island Of The Burning Doomed(1967) is one of my favorites. The isolated island off the British coast(not really) with Chris Lee, Peter Cushing, Patrick Allen(very good here), and Jane Merrow.

Destination Inner Space(1966) fun movie with the beautiful Sheree North.

Out Of Thin Air(1969) Not all that good but has George Sanders sniffing at everyone as always.

Quest For Love(1971) with naughty Joan collins. The second half is hilarious as the male lead goes crazy trying to find the "nice" Joan Collins character with a life-threatening heart condition he has met in an alternate reality.

Like you, I enjoy these movies even though the quality greatly varies.

reply

Oh, I LOVE "Seconds" That's a wonderful surreal movie. Much out of character for Rock Hudson (and Will Greer did a great job too). Crack in the World is also a cool one.

I have to check out "The Power" I'm quite a George Pal fan.
I have:

Destination Moon
When Worlds Collide
The Time Machine
Conquest of Space
War of the Worlds
Atlantis, The Lost Continent (on VHS)

I think "Destination Moon" was truly groundbreaking and didn't get the credit it deserved.

A couple of monster movies I like (with dinosaurs)that aren't extremely well known are "The Beast of Hollow Mountain" which is a hybrid of sci-fi and western. There's nothing cooler then seeing a T rex running through a stampede with a cow in his mouth.

And "The Giant Behemoth" which is a little like "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms".

I like most of the Bert I Gordon movies too.

Got The Power and a number of the others at videoscreams in Ohio. They aren't factory sealed DVDs and they make you sign a disclaimer. Did want to see a lot of these titles that apparently will never be released. So decided to go that route. I like all of "BIG's" as well, including Picture Mommy Dead. Also fond of Atlantis, The Lost Continent. George Pal's movies always had great colors and effects. If you haven't already, you can get an inexpensive DVD at Amazon of The Seven Faces Of Doctor Lao. Tony Randall gives an awesome performance. Til next time. be well!

I looked at your posts. Really like many of those movies. love Teenage Caveman. I also like the Jack Arnold movie "Space Children"

I mention this because "Space Children" will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on June 19th:

http://www.amazon.com/Space-Children-Blu-ray-Michel-Ray/dp/B007PXYXEE/ ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1337000331&sr=8-3

I am looking forward to this as I've not seen this released before. I bet the transfer will be great!

Now if we can only get them to release Universal's "The Thing That Couldn't Die"

reply

Well, at the beginning of the movie we have a man ripped apart, horses and cattle ripped apart but towards the middle of the movie we see the 'giant' awaken from under the dirt like it is the first time he has risen.....what did all the earlier damage?

reply

Yes! that's the biggest mistake and the most amusing (unless they planned a sequel with another killer) Maybe the giant killed and then took a short nap with his axe under the earth!!

I was wondering if anyone would get that one!

Nother one:
How bout the snow near the end that keeps starting and stopping every other camera shot!

The sheriff is so white that he looks like an albino....not sure if they over did the make-up or they found a cadaver to play the part.

reply

The only mistake I found on viewing this again (forty-five years after first watching it on Big 3 Theater) was a legalistic one. If Devil's Crag Park is over the county line, negating the sheriff's ability to arrest the falsely accused protagonist for suspicion of murder, then the former has no authority to post it off limits. Only the state government agency in charge of such parks would have that right.
