I don't know about "offensive" - I think if someone doesn't mean to offend, then there's no offence, which means that the word 'offensive' can't be used with wisdom.

But I do know that a lot of the supposed 'japanese' people are not in fact japanese (you can even see it from their names here in IMDb), and their japanese pronunciation - although in some ways admirable, leaves something to be desired for, if immersion is to be maintained.

So they show stock footage of japan, while having locations that are clearly not in Japan. The Tokyo international airport only has the name in english, and only part of "Tokyo" (the kanji for "Tou" - Tokyo is actually supposed to be written as "Toukyou" or "Tookyoo" or something that signifies the double wovels, but mistakes were made a long time ago, and now it's impossible to rectify) has been written on a hangar's wall. What the..?

The worst insult to the viewer's intelligence and cultural awareness is when the little boy speaks japanese. The woman tries it pretty well, and her pronunciation is almost acceptable at times, but her intonation is WAY off during certain bits, making it sound incredibly goofy/funny, the way the japanese sound, when they make fun of the gaijins and their bad japanese pronunciation. For example, the gaijins might intonate the wrong part of the word "Onegaishimasu", making it "ONEgaishimasu", which sounds funny to japanese. The woman makes similar intonations.

It's pretty hard to take anything seriously or believe they are really in Japan, after all these disasters.. it's clear that they are nowhere near Japan, and they just wanted to cash-in with the 'exotique' of the far east, instead of making things authentic.

Some people do pronounce japanese in proper way, and there seem to be actual japanese people in the cast - which makes it all the more curious that there are non-japanese that have simply been coached (badly) to say certain phrases. Why include non-japanese, if you can get japanese people? Weren't there enough of them? Why make a movie that requires japanese people in the cast, if you can't get authentic, real, genuine japanese people, speaking japanese properly?

This movie is indeed a disaster.

And why is military always shown in a good light in hollyweird movies, especially these Jerry Lewis monstrosities? They are an institution of WAR. They are an instrument of evil, their purpose is to MURDER. They of course rationalize, whitewash and doubletalk it, so that it sounds better to the masses. When they changed the 'ministry of war' into 'ministry of defense' (that goes to start wars so they can continue murdernig on a large scale, and pretty much does nothing else), it should have been a red flag right there, of what's to come.

The hypocrisy of it all.

Why can't anyone seem to make a movie where there are japanese characters that can actually speak japanese perfectly? Or at least fluently? Or at least intonate the dámn words correctly? Sheesh!
