You would think the could come up with original sound effects.

LOL, I watched this again today all the way through and recognized the music too. I could almost picture which scene in Forbidden Planet the background music I was hearing today was from. I had never seen the first half of this film and boy was it boring.

The visual effects are totally laughable. I wouldn't even call them "visual effects." You can see the rocket mounted on a pole. And the "asteroid" is just a large sparkler. So, shamelessly reusing the sound effects from an infinitely better movie is par for the course.
