Heartbreaking scene.

I just finished watching The Fly again since I've been on a Vincent Price kick lately. There's a scene in the movie that I think is even better than the famous ending. It's the scene where Andre (post-transformation) is writing on the chalkboard to his wife with instructions to kill him, with the "fly" part of his self fighting with him. At the end he writes "LOVE YOU" and I swear I almost misted up a little. Fantastic scene. I think this movie's really good, especially if you don't compare it to the masterful Cronenberg version of the story and let it stand as its own movie.

What's the Spanish for drunken bum?

VERY much agree. You nailed it Mr McLaurel. The terrible desperation at the blackboard with his shaking hand, him on his knees as if begging all that is above for mercy, then, his last tragic and sad thoughts of his wife as he says, "Love you".

He was good man. His thoughts of his machine ending hunger and pain shows his care for mankind and yet, for this good man to suffer as he did, not only suffering the loss of his humanity, but also the loss of his lover and friend, his wife is indeed heart wrenching.

Precious few horror movies (I guess this is technically sci-fi) have this much raw pathos and powerful emotion.

I was impressed with the physical acting done during that scene - similar to Steve Martin in "All of Me." In fact, I thought his use of posture throughout the scenes in the mask were excellent.

Yes, I thought this was going to be a typical monster movie when in fact is was very emotional and more about human relationships. A very good scene in a pretty decent movie.
