U.S. DVD from Sinister Cinema (October 2012)

Sinister Cinema in the U.S. has just acquired this film and has it on DVD-R for $16.95 (less if you take advantage of one of their frequent sales). It's in Norwegian with English subtitles and is listed under its English-language title, Lake of the Dead.

I ordered it and just got done watching it, loved it; spooky and remarkably atmospheric psychological horror film.

I'm a sucker for "cabin in the woods"-type films, and this certainly didn't disappoint...I wonder if it's the first of its kind?

Thanks again

Say, how did you even find your way to this obscure site and film, SeanJoyce?! I'd never heard of it until SC acquired it, and they recommended it so highly I decided to get it. They do dig up some interesting stuff every so often.

You ask an interesting question about whether this might be the first "cabin-in-the-woods" type spooky film. My instinct is to say no, but offhand I can't think of a predecessor. Something to muse on.

Anyway, glad you saw the recommendation and liked the movie.

Somebody mentioned it in passing in a thread over at the Horror board. The title intrigued me, and some minor investigative work revealed it to be my bread-and-butter.

It's a DVD-R, but the A/V quality is very good. It says it was filmed in "Agna Scope", was it originally as cropped as presented here? My copy also curiously pauses for about a second twice early in the film, does yours have that glitch?

Thanks again for steering me in the way of an obtainable copy. The moment I read the premise I knew I had to have it, and I'm glad I do

I really don't remember whether my copy has a glitch. It's not uncommon for such things to crop up on SC discs. Over the years they've improved the quality of their copying so their DVD-Rs are generally now much improved over many years ago, but I have had occasional problems. The good thing is that they will replace a defective DVD anytime, even years after you buy it. No 30-day nonsense with them. So you should be able to exchange the bad disc for a better one.

As to its cropping, again, I'd have to look at it again. But it's also a fact that a number of widescreen films issued by Sinister are not in their proper aspect ratios, based on the print they're able to get. But here too, they've improved immensely over the years, so that their newer w/s films are almost always letterboxed, and they've even upgraded some older ones to w/s prints, such as Caltiki the Immortal Monster. However, most of their films weren't w/s to begin with, so this issue affects only a portion of their catalog.

When I can get to it I'll check the disc out again and let you know how mine is.

I reckon that this may have been first actual 'cabin in the woods' spooky film. The only film that I can think of that deals with a haunted forest theme before it is 'The Phantom of the Convent' (1934).
