When Harker hides his diary at the gate entrance to the castle, there is a small statuette of the Madonna and Child. Anyone else think that is strange for the entrance to the castle of someone evil?

Well, Dracula used to be a christian war lord. One way or another things had changed since then, but he still 'lives' in his (I think ancestral) castle.

The Madonna is outside the castle technically. Maybe a modest attempt to ward off evil or sanctify those unholy grounds?

Ironically in real-life, if you go to Transylvania, Romania today they identify Vlad Tepes/Vlad "Dracula" (The inspiration for Dracula) as more of a Christian nobleman who stopped the invasion of the Turks, granted by using extensively violent measures. Not that they shirk away from the popularity Dracula has since given the region....
If he was a Christian nobleman then there's no reason he wouldn't have some Christian relics from his past life around the castle, although I imagine he may have tried to get rid of whatever relics were actually inside the castle. Who knows, perhaps the local peasants put it there to try and ward off evil spirits. The garlic flowers and such present in the inn Van Helsing visits early on suggests that the locals are well aware of what's going on.
Can't be too careful with all those weirdos running around.
