I have seen this show, and even performed in it in high school, but I can't remember how Joe Hardy tricks Applegate into getting his soul back...
shareI believe that Applegate broke the contract by changing Young Joe back into Old Joe before the final out of the last game. Applegate wanted the Yankees to win. Old Joe crosses him up by summoning his waning strength and catching Mickey Mantle's long drive (which must have stayed in the air a record time).
Returning home, Old Joe resists Applegate's new offers. That's how he won.
Yeah, that works.
I think the moment when the clock stikes is weak. We ought to have some buildup and something more definite. Until the cut to the park you can't be sure he's really lost. (There's usually a trick at this point, like daylight saving or crossing a time zone - cf the International Date Line in "Around the World in 80 Days".)
