I'm surprised that nobody so far seems to have mentioned Nathan Van Cleave's highly unusual score, composed for a single piano. It adds enormously to the forbidding, doom-laden mood of the film, and is quite unlike the music for any other sci-fi movie from this period that I can recall...

Yes, Van Cleave's modern piano score contributes a lot to the eeriness of the movie. Parts of it have a similar feeling to parts of Bernard Herrmann's score for "The Day the Earth Stood Still".
