Was the design of the Colossus inspired by a Western Movie ?

I just watched the dvd of the 1950 film WAGON MASTER
(directed by John Ford)
and in it is James Arness ( 6 ft 7")
and probably 6 ft 9" in his boots.
He played a really bad guy in a big heavy overcoat.
Everytime I see him in a scene I automatically
think how much he reminds me of The Colossus.
What do you think ?

James Arness was the tall alien in the original "The Thing."

To me, Colossus more resembles the giant humanoid robot Gort in "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951) which also had a big head and eyes that could disintegrate.
