Effective entertainment

Although loaded with stereotypes and contrived situations, this film is nevertheless a very diverting way to spend two hours. There is something inherently likable about Victor Mature and he plays the role of protector of the little Chinese kid and his innocently acquired girl-servant very well. Some hot Red Cross ladies and Chinese bar girls, juxtaposed with wisecracking GIs and airmen, provide the external spice. Ward Bond as a chess-playing clergyman hovers above all. A good "movie" in the old fashioned sense - touching, quirky, and entertaining.
