There is one simple reason why that would need to be changed for the movie:

The Production Code.

In an American movie of that time period (at least, one that wanted to be distributed / shown in the US) you could not show (unambiguously) the play's version of events with Maggie's adultery any more than Brick's "repressed homosexuality / bisexuality". Under the Code, an adulterer would *need* to reap the "wages of sin", be severely punished, by the end of the movie ....... and having your husband cut you off from sex for a year (or whatever that exact time frame was) is not what they meant. If Maggie was clearly stated to have been an adulterer in the movie then she would have had to have died or been imprisoned or some such disasterous consequence. Since that was most definitely not going to be how the movie ended, Maggie could not commit adultery.

The demands of censors and the Production Code ruined some great movies, -most notable for me was "A Streetcar Named Desire"- but I thought "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" was a fine film even with their input. It still all made sense and made for a good film in the end, even if it was not exactly the story Tenessee Williams intended.

Something that hasn't been clarified...

In the play, Maggie and Skipper did go to bed together but Skipper was, shall we say, unable to perform sexually.

Wait a minute, a year after this movie came out "Some Like it Hot" was released without the approval of the Hays Code and it was a commercial success.

Why didnt the makers of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof film it closer to the play and just release it without the Code's imput?
