Burl Ives should have won for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

Burl Ives should have won supporting actor for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof in 1958.
I just watched Cat on a Hot Tin Roof on TV and he was brilliant.
I havn't seen The Big Country which he actually won for.

THE BIG COUNTRY kinda sucks, and Burl's performance in that is nowhere near as layered or showy as in this film.

On TCM, Robert Osborne said that Burl's performance in Roof put him over the top to win. I think it was well known that he was going to win, the big question though was for which film would get credit for the award.

"Oh, Jeff, I don't want to die!"
"Neither do I, baby, but if I have to I'm gonna die last."

Agree. It seems the studio made a faux pas and lumped all the CAT actors in leading categories, thereby killing any chances for Burl Ives & Judith Anderson (who would have been shoo-ins in the supporting acting races) as well as Jack Carson and Madeline Sherwood. Ives won the Oscar for the BIG COUNTRY but I think everyone knew what he really won it for.

I wondered why the other 4 actors weren`t nominated in the supporting categories , they all deserved nominations and Burl definitely deserved to win for this instead of The Big Country.

Burl Ives stole this film!
I think he was nominated, and won, for The Big Country due to the alphabet. Just like Leonardo DiCaprio was nominated in 2006 for Blood Diamond and not The Departed, and Kate Winslet for The Reader and not Revolutionary Road.

Martin Scorsese IS the best
