Glad I made the effort to watch it

The first few minutes were not at all what I'd expected - rather unengaging and I didn't think I'd be able to put up with those vile children for long... To be honest, it was only the fact that Paul Newman is so astonishingly beautiful and very watchable that initially stopped me turning it off. But, I stuck with it and I'm glad I did... No one's particularly likeable... Well, perhaps a couple of characters would be likeable, but hide it well... It's all quite intense and heavy-going and those kids really are awful. But, I ended up enjoying it.

Well, I only decided to watch it coz it got on the long list of Wittertainment's TV Film of the Week - but with some scepticism, I've got to admit.

Wrong! I ended up feeling so glad I found time for it. Some brilliant performances, and a really engaging scenario. Like you, I felt quite detached from it at first, but it grew and grew, and in the end I was totally captivated by it. The scene in the cellar between Brick and Big Daddy was astounding. When they talked about Big Daddy's own dad, and the importance of love, I was blown away - the TV went all blurry for a few minutes there.

Not sure why I was prejudiced against it before watching it, but really pleased that I was able to get past that. Quality film.

I saw this years ago and saw it again this week. An excellent film, i enjoyed it more this time. The dialogue is excellent, taking a rather specifically dysfunctional family and making them believeable. The acting with one exception was excellent. Liz Taylor obviously was great here, as were Burl Ives and Judith Anderson (although she occasionally had issues with the accent, i guess).

But I found Paul Newman's performance oddly not quite on teh same level, and I consider him on the whole to be an excellent actor. This I found is not in fact one of his better performances.

Still I gave it a nine. Might have been a ten but for Newman.
